All about IP telephony
What is IP telephony?
IP telephony means you make and receive calls over the internet instead of the old copper network. Your voice is sent as data over your broadband connection — hence the names IP telephony, broadband telephony and VoIP (Voice over IP). For you as a caller it sounds and works just like ordinary telephony: you dial the number and talk as you always have.
The difference from the old fixed-line telephony is that you no longer depend on a phone socket in the wall. As long as you have internet you can call — at home, at the office or wherever you are.
How IP telephony works
The technology is based on the SIP standard, which sets up the call between you and the recipient over the internet. You can use IP telephony in several ways: with an ordinary phone connected to a small telephony adapter (a “telephony box”), with a dedicated IP phone, or directly in an app on your mobile or computer.
With us you get everything you need. If you already have an ordinary phone you like, you connect it to the adapter and you’re up and running — no hassle and no technician required.
The benefits of IP telephony
IP telephony is usually significantly cheaper than traditional telephony, both in fixed monthly fee and in call rates. You keep your old phone number, avoid separate phone bills and can gather telephony and broadband with the same provider — on one invoice with Swedish support.
You also get modern features that otherwise cost extra: caller ID, call forwarding, voicemail and the ability to call and answer from several devices at once. For businesses you can build on with switchboard features, queues and opening hours.
Keep your phone number
Switching to IP telephony doesn’t mean changing your number. Through a so-called number porting we move your existing landline number to us — free of charge and without you having to contact your old operator. You simply keep being reachable on the same number as before.
The copper network is shutting down — IP telephony is the replacement
The old copper network (PSTN) is gradually being decommissioned in Sweden, and traditional fixed-line telephony is therefore disappearing at more and more addresses. IP telephony is the modern replacement: the same ability to call with a fixed home phone, but over broadband instead of the copper wire. If you’ve been told your fixed telephony is ending, IP telephony is an easy way to keep a home phone.
What do you need to get started?
You need an internet connection — fibre or mobile broadband both work great — and either a telephony adapter with an ordinary phone, an IP phone or our app. You order with BankID, we ship the equipment pre-configured, and you connect it yourself in minutes. If you want to keep your number, we handle the porting for you.
How IP telephony from Internetport works
IP telephony carries your calls over the broadband connection instead of the old copper network — same phone habits, lower price. You can keep your existing phone number (we handle the porting) or pick a new one, and the service works with a dedicated IP phone, a telephone box connected to your current phone, or a softphone app.
Calls within Sweden cost from SEK 0.12/min to fixed lines and SEK 0.62/min to mobiles, with a SEK 0.50 connection fee per call — the full international price list is available on our telephony page. The subscription itself is SEK 45/month including VAT.
The hardware on this page is pre-configured: plug the phone or telephone box into your router and it registers automatically against our telephony platform. Pay up front or split the cost over 12 months.
Businesses that need multiple lines or a switchboard should look at our business telephony and SIP trunk offerings — the same platform scales from a single home line to a full office.
