In an open city network the network owner owns and maintains the fibre, while you choose your service provider completely freely. That keeps prices down and means you can switch provider without anyone having to lay new fibre or do a new installation. If you still have a commitment period with your current provider it’s worth checking the notice period, but the switch in the city network itself is smooth and needs no technician.

As a rule of thumb, 100 Mbit/s is plenty for an ordinary family that streams, browses and works. 250–500 Mbit/s gives comfortable margins for several simultaneous 4K streams and gaming, and 1000 Mbit/s (1 Gbit) or more suits the connected home, large downloads and anyone who wants the very best.
