Frequently asked questions
What does a load balancer do?+
It receives traffic on a public IP and spreads it across several servers (targets). If a server goes down, traffic is automatically moved to the healthy ones — your users notice nothing and you scale by adding more targets.
Can I balance servers outside Internetport?+
Yes. Targets can be dedicated servers and VPSes with us, but also external IP addresses at another datacenter or cloud. You can load balance a mixed environment from a single VIP.
What happens if a server goes down?+
Configurable health checks monitor each target actively and passively. A target that stops responding is automatically taken out of rotation and put back when it is healthy again. The load balancer itself runs active/standby with failover in about 3 seconds.
How do HTTPS and certificates work?+
At Layer 7 you can terminate TLS directly on the load balancer with Let’s Encrypt certificates that renew automatically. If you prefer end-to-end encryption you send the traffic as passthrough to your own servers.
What is the difference between Layer 4 and Layer 7?+
Layer 4 balances at the IP and port level (TCP/UDP) and is fast and protocol-agnostic. Layer 7 understands HTTP/HTTPS and can route on things like path and hostname and handle HTTP/2. The same load balancer does both.
Can I change size later?+
Yes. You can upgrade between LB 5, LB 20 and LB 40 as your needs grow — more services, targets, certificates and included traffic. If you need more than LB 40 we’ll help you with a custom setup.
